Case Study: Students as Partners in Supportive Learning

Educators shape the future—but too often, outdated systems hold them back. Eskolta rethinks how supportive environments can unlock student potential and inspire real growth. Eskolta worked with MS118, a New York middle school, to design a space where differences aren’t just accepted, but valued drivers for learning.

Quick Facts

In pursuit of culturally responsive-sustaining learning at MS118, Eskolta turned to those who know best: students, families, and educators. Their insights helped the middle school imagine learning environments where every voice counts.

Overview

Opportunity

Strong foundations of respect and partnership exist between MS118 families, students, and staff. But inequitable experiences and limited engagement suggest a chance to build deeper connections across the school community.

Insight

Respect alone isn’t enough. MS118 has built caring relationships, but persistent gaps remain. Staff struggle with student-led learning and deep social emotional learning (SEL). Deficit thinking and inconsistent implementation hold the learning community back.

Intervention

Eskolta’s strategic plan uncovered critical opportunities for growth—challenging deficit mindsets, amplifying students as curriculum co-creators, and advancing inclusive practices. These insights shaped a powerful report guiding equitable school transformation.

Shifting Mindsets, Centering Students, Expanding Inclusion

When schools pause to reflect, listen deeply, and center the experiences of students and staff, they uncover what’s been missing—and what’s possible. From classrooms to leadership teams, transformation begins by valuing every voice.
