4 | Planning Assessments and Instruction That Support Mastery-Based Learning

A mastery-based learning system sets students up for success when each aspect of a classroom learning experience— instructional tasks, assessment, and feedback—are aligned and sequenced to ultimately lead to mastery of learning goals. Such a system can be powerful, especially for students who have faced repeated failures. When teachers know exactly what students have learned so far, they can individualize support to help those students focus on learning the skills and understandings they need to move to the next level. In this session, participants practice a technique for sequencing instructional tasks that lead to an assessment of cognitively rigorous learning goals.
