2 | Grading Policies That Highlight Mastery

The experience of receiving a grade can be deflating, de-motivating, or confusing, especially for students who have struggled in the past. Ideally grades should communicate to students what they have learned and what they need to work on. But at many schools, grades are abstract numbers. It can be hard to know exactly what those numbers mean or where they came from, which skills or understandings are strengths and which merit attention. In this session, participants will explore ways a mastery-based grading system can communicate more useful information about students’ learning journeys.
