Being prepared for life after high school means doing more than just passing exams and gaining credits, especially for students who have struggled previously in school.  To help students master key skills and respond to their own needs, educators can incorporate aspects of a mastery-based learning system into their instruction including:

• Creating engaging, authentic assessments that lead to higher-order thinking.
• Building a mastery-based learning system for students to progress through skills with responsive support.
• Providing meaningful feedback and opportunities for growth for students.
• Using rubrics as planning and reflection tools.
